Play Schemas: Positioning

Positioning

A child experiencing a positioning schema will be seen positioning, ordering and arranging objects or themselves in a specific way.

What it might look like:

  • placing an object in an exact position (ie: on top of, next to, in front of, beside, behind)
  • lining up objects in size, shape, or color order
  • can sometimes extend to food-- not wanting food to be touching or mixed together

Positioning Activities and Materials

  • Balancing objects on a scale or rocking balance
  • Using peg boards to create patterns
  • Hide and seek games (either inviting children to hide or hiding objects for children to search for)
  • Stacking blocks or cups
  • People, animal figurines, cars, etc. are great for lining up and organizing
  • Creating different shapes on the floor or table using painters tape and inviting kids to line up different toys (blocks, people, cars, etc.) in and around the lines of tape
  • Uneven balance stones
