Play Schemas: Orientation

Orientation

A child experiencing an orientation schema will be trying to look at things from different viewpoints.

What it might look like:

  • hanging upside down
  • climbing under furniture
  • looking at something through their legs or the legs of an adult
  • climbing on top of a piece of furniture
  • putting objects in different places or positions

Orientation Activities and Materials

  • Use paper towel and toilet paper rolls to make binoculars
  • Include kaleidoscopes, binoculars, magnifying glasses, and materials in your science area
  • Tie a block to a string to create a pendulum (tie the string to a door frame or shelf so you don't have to hold it)
  • Attach mirrors to the floor or the underside of furniture for kids to explore (ie: attach a mirror to the bottom of a table)
