Play Schemas: Enveloping

Enveloping

Children experiencing an enveloping schema will be drawn to completely cover objects or their bodies with different materials.

What it might look like:

  • hiding, camouflaging, or concealing themselves or their bodies
  • building forts with blankets and furniture
  • painting or coloring a piece of paper entirely one color
  • using clay, play dough, or fabric to cover toys
  • covering hands with glue or paint

Enveloping Activities and Materials

  • Use socks to create hand puppets
  • Nesting toys (like stacking cups or boxes)
  • Using play dough with people or animals
  • Use old socks, pillow cases or cushion covers to stuff things into
  • Add envelopes to your art area for kids to stuff with their art projects and other paper creations
  • Shape sorting toys
  • Add fabric to the dramatic play area (can be used to wrap up baby dolls or stuffed animals)
  • Use newspaper and tape to wrap up boxes as pretend gifts or packages
  • Make dumplings as a cooking activity
