Successful Circle Time
Whether you call it "Circle Time" or "Morning Meeting," early educators have differing opinions on whether or not it's something you need to do every day. Circle Time can feel especially challenging in a mixed-age setting.
Here are some ideas to set yourself up for success, especially if Circle Time feels like a struggle:
- Who says circle time needs to be seated? Sitting criss-cross applesauce takes a lot of extra energy and attention for young children. Mix it up with dancing and movement activities that allow children to move and wiggle. Or allow kids to sit how they feel comfortable.
- You get to choose the size of your circle. There are always those days where it feels like your kids just can't keep their hands on their own bodies. If that's the case, make your circle bigger. Allow kids enough space to stretch out and wiggle without disturbing their neighbors.
- Keep it short. There is no hard and fast rule about how long a child will be able to sit on any given day, but aim to keep it no more than 5-7 minutes, especially in the beginning. You don't need more than a book, a song, and a movement activity for a successful circle time!
